💐LESSON 1.1 SCIENCE IS PART OF DAILY LIFE

At the end of today’s lesson you are able to:

  1. Relate daily activities to science.
  2. Generalise the meaning of science.
  3. Summarise the the importance of science in everyday life.
  4. Describe the fields of science.
  5. Communicate about careers related to science.
  6. Relate subjects to be studied in science to careers of interest.

 

🌺WHAT IS SCIENCE??

  • Science is a systematic study of nature and how it affects us and our environment.
  • Science can explain nature phenomena that happen in our environment
  • How? Through careful observations, studies and investigations by Scientists
  • The information produced from the study of science is known
    as scientific knowledge.

 

🌺NATURAL PHENOMENA

We see various natural phenomena in daily life. Natural phenomena are things that happen in nature. Below are a few examples of natural phenomena:

  • Tornado
  • Tsunami
  • Growth of baby into an adult
  • Melting of ice
  • Thunderstorm

 

🌺THE IMPORTANCE OF SCIENCE

Science plays important roles in our daily life. Here are some examples:

  • Contributes to the area of engineering such as construction of tall building
  • Invention of satellites has made communication more effective and faster
  • Increases crop yields by invention of fertilizers, pesticides and hydroponic method
  • Discovery of vaccines and antibiotics – controlling the infectious diseases

 

🌺CAREERS IN SCIENCE

Science offers various career opportunities according to one’s area interest. Listed below are few examples:

 

🌺VARIOUS FIELDS IN SCIENCE

Science covers a very wide area of study and is divided into various fields such as:

  1. Biology : Study of living things (Zoology, Microbiology, Physiology, Botany)
  2. Physics : Study of energy and its influence on matter (Engineering)
  3. Chemistry : Study of matter and its reactions (Pharmacology, Forensic, Toxicology)
  4. Geology : Study of rocks, soil and minerals (Geochemistry, Geomorphology, Geophysics)
  5. Astronomy : Study of planets, stars and other objects in the universe (Astrophysics)
  6. Meteorology : Study of weather and climate change (Hydrometeorology)

  • Most machine and inventions that we use every day are scientific innovations.
  • For example, cars, aeroplanes, telephones, computers and others.
  • These machines and instruments help us solve problems in our life.
